"DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To enable individuals with fine motor or vision disabilities to stay within lines on a tablet or write in straight lines. To make the guide, place a sheet of card stock on flat surface. Use a color that will create contrast between the writing surface and the guide. Using a ruler, measure one-half inch from left side of card stock at top and bottom and mark with a dot. Do the same on the right side. Place ruler along both dots and draw a connecting line from top to bottom. Place markings on this line from top of page as follows: Measure one inch from top and mark. Now mark two inches below that, then three inches from that mark, and mark again. Complete the rest of page marking first two inches and then three inches until marks are approximately two inches from bottom of page. Follow same procedure for right side. Starting with the top dots, lay the ruler horizontally (dot to dot) and draw a horizontal line connecting them. Continue the same procedure down the page. The page should have horizontal lines with top line measuring one inch from the top of page and all other lines following the two-inch, then three-inch pattern the rest of the way down the page. At the second horizontal line, use an Exacto or utility knife and ruler to cut out a rectangle using the lines as a guide. Skip the next line and follow same procedure until you reach the last line. If desired, reinforce the guide by taping the horizontal slats. Templates for check guides, time sheets, or any other form can be created in the same way by creating openings to match the form. MATERIALS: Bright or dark colored card stock weight paper, ruler, and a pen or pencil. TOOLS: Exacto knife or utility knife. SKILLS REQUIRED: Measuring, marking, and cutting. TITLE: Writing Guide.
