FlexPen is a pre-loaded syringe injection aid designed for use by individuals with diabetes. About the size of a pen, it comes prefilled with 3 milliliters (mL) (300 units) of insulin, so the user does not need to draw insulin from a vial. Instead, the user dials the amount of insulin needed, holds the device at different angles to distribute the medicine, then injects by pressing a button. The device can be carried in a pocket or purse, or kept on a nightstand. Once in use, it does not need refrigeration, but must be kept at room temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. A prescription is required. The device comes packaged with 5 devices per box, and it is available with one of three Novo Nordisk insulins, Levemir, NovoLog, or NovoLog Mix 70/30. Levemir is a long-acting insulin of rDNA origin that is taken once or twice a day. A device prefilled with Levemir can be used for 42 days, a device prefilled with NovoLog can be used for 28 days, and a device prefilled with NovoLog Mix 70/30 can be used for 14 days. The device can be used with the short, thin NovoFine disposable needles.
