---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype device to assist individuals who are blind or have low vision to identify objects and read text. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a camera-equipped ring, EyeRing, that can identify objects and read text, transmitting the information to the user audibly. The EyeRing is a finger-worn device that the user points at an object, takes a photo, and hear voice feedback describing the object that the ring is focused on. In addition, the EyeRing also works as a navigation or translation aid and can be used to assist children in learning how to read. The EyeRing offers voice output feedback through a Bluetooth earpiece. Printed with plastic using a 3-D printer, the augmented reality ring has a small camera, a processor, and Bluetooth connectivity. A double-click of a button on the ring’s side and a voice command initiates the process. The EyeRing can be set to identify text, colors, or even currency and prices on price tags. Images are sent to an Android smartphone via Bluetooth where an application (or app) processes the image and generates the results via a digital voice. The team is currently working on an iPhone app as well. AUTHOR: Gene Ryan Briones. TITLE: EyeRing voice-activated augmented reality device for the blind. WEBSITE: Ubergizmo.
