Foundations in Speech Perception is a CD-ROM based auditory training activity software program designed to teach listening skills to children with moderate to severe hearing loss, including those with cochlear implants. The program, designed for children from three to twelve years of age, features a series of lessons on three levels that can be used in the home, school, or speech therapy setting. It also allows the child to work at his or her own pace independently or with adult assistance. The lessons use real recorded voices and are customized according to the child's skill level. Each lesson is introduced with a practice task to familiarize the child with the lesson before he or she moves on to the evaluated task. The lessons range in degree of difficulty from basic (matching words with pictures) to advanced (distinguishing between similar sounding words) to complex (identifying words or phrases without visual cues). Correct responses are rewarded with stars and incorrect responses bring encouragement to try again. When a skill is achieved, the program automatically moves the user to the next level. In addition to the lessons also enables children to listen to or tell stories. A painting activity is also included. COMPATIBILITY: IBM PC and compatible computers and Macintosh.
